Every home needs heating and cooling, and particularly in the Sarasota area, cooling season can last the majority of the year.
Additionally, your air conditioning can be supplemented by humidity-controlling products and additional equipment that helps to keep you cool and comfortable in your home.
The weather in Sarasota can be taxing! That’s why it’s important to know all of your options; sometimes the basics aren’t enough, or they could still be improved upon.
This article talks through everything you’ll want to know as you install, upgrade or compliment your home air conditioning system. Some of it may be information you already know, but we’re guessing you’ll learn something and may have some new cooling options to consider.
HVAC Services in Sarasota, Florida
HVAC - Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning - can include a lot more than people realize.
Yes, your air conditioner, heat pump, and/or furnace are the major pieces of equipment that will take up the most time, money and attention. But they’re far from the whole of what you can be doing to stay comfortable in your home.
Here are a handful of services we offer that go beyond this standard set of HVAC services.
- Ductwork modification
- Ductwork sealing and insulation
- Air quality audits
- High-efficiency filter upgrades
- Air scrubbers and air purifier installation
- Humidity controlling products such as humidifiers and dehumidifiers
- Ductless mini-split installation or hard-to-cool places
No one needs all of those things, but nearly every home would be improved by one or more of them. The result can be thousands of dollars saved in heating and cooling costs, and a more comfortable home throughout the year.
Air Conditioning Options
If your air conditioner is over 20 years old (and many are) you may not even realize how much AC technology has progressed in recent years.
Home air conditioners have been around for well over half a century at this point, and the technology driving entry-level equipment hasn’t changed much in that time. However, improvements to equipment staging and efficiency have been enormous. Let’s see some examples.
Depending on what type of system and energy supply you have, you may use an air conditioner or heat pump to cool your home. Heat pumps have a reversing valve that also allows them to provide heat to the home. They can be slightly more expensive to install occasionally, but can be cost-effective over time.
Regardless of equipment type, systems generally come in one of three staging options:
- Single stage cooling
- Two stage cooling
- Variable speed cooling
Single-stage is your tried & true technology, the system is either on or off. Two-stage is exactly as it says: there’s an additional setting, usually 50% or 60%, that gives the system more energy-efficiency for when your home doesn’t need the full power of the equipment.
Variable speed can be extremely efficient and can boast dozens or even hundreds of stages that help to fine-tune the cooling in your home. This is the most expensive type of system, but if you live in a multi-level home, struggle to keep your home cool in the summer, and plan on being in the home for several years, it can reward your investment with cost savings and comfort over time.
Residential Cooling Accessories
It gets muggy here in Sarasota. A lot of homes need a whole-home dehumidifier. Homes with basements are more likely to experience high humidity and the problems that come with it, such as mold, mildew, bug infestations and severe allergies.
This is among the most frequent products we add to installations, repairs and other services, but not the only one.
For the winter months, the opposite is sometimes true and your home could use a whole-home humidifier. This can assist with sleep and lingering coughs, among other household problems.
Air purifiers can be useful for homes with pets, smokers, or people with respiratory issues.
These same homes often benefit from an upgraded HVAC filter that can capture dust, hair, smoke particles, allergens, and even bacteria and virus particles such as COVID!
Indoor Air Quality for Sarasota Homes
Indoor air quality is all of these things. How uncomfortably hot can it get in your bedroom in the summer? How cold is it in the winter?
Do you find yourself having to dust your home too often? This can be an issue with the filter.
Your air conditioner itself contributes to this as well. One of the things an air conditioner does is remove humidity. If your home is excessively humid, it might be because your AC unit can’t keep up with the burden of the humid Florida weather.
There are solutions to all of these problems, and they can be found and fixed by a licensed HVAC professional who is trained in your entire home’s comfort potential.
